The Bank of England has cut interest rates to 4%, taking the cost of borrowing to the lowest level for more than two years.
The cut, from the previous rate of 4.25%, is the fifth since August last year, but was only narrowly backed by the Bank’s policymakers who took two votes to reach a decision.
Lower rates will reduce monthly mortgage costs for some homeowners but it could also mean smaller returns for savers.
At 4%, interest rates are now at their lowest level since March 2023. This will boost some mortgage-holders and borrowers, but it is likely to mean smaller returns for savers.
People with tracker mortgages, which are loans that track the Bank’s base rate, should see an immediate reduction in monthly repayments. There about 600,000 people who have one.
The latest cut in rates means repayments on an average standard variable rate mortgage of £250,000 over 25 years will fall by £40 per month, according to financial information company Moneyfacts.

This year Harrison Boothman will be joining our friends at CRAVEN COMMUNITY BOXING CLUB to run together as part of their team in an effort to raise funds for the Bradford Hospitals Neo Natal Appeal.
The Neonatal Unit cares for more than 500 premature and poorly babies each year. Around one baby in 10 requires admission to the unit, which cares for babies from all over the Yorkshire and Humber region.

Director of Skipton-based Estate Agents Harrison Boothman, Sam Shaw is running the New York Marathon (26.2 miles) on Sunday 5th November.
“I’m aiming to raise £1,000 for Skipton-based children’s charity, The Principle Trust, who provide free week-long respite holidays to children who are underprivileged, disadvantaged, disabled, have life-limiting conditions, or who have experienced poverty, trauma or abuse.”
This isn’t the first time Harrison Boothman have supported the local children’s charity, in May this year Sales Valuers Jacob and Austen ran the Leeds Half Marathon and raised an amazing £1,000, which supported two families each with a life-changing holiday.
The Trust’s 100% donations policy ensures every penny raised from events and marketing directly benefits the children and their families.
